CMOS has always had the point of view that a clean office is a happy office, and now we’ve got proof!
A recent publication from a research group in the Netherlands has found that a cleaner office can lead to more productive and satisfied staff. Now this may seem like an obvious result, but the impact can be easily overlooked.
The research looked at the impact of perceived cleanliness on staff productivity and satisfaction, and found that both were reduced by higher particle counts in the air and dirt and stains on surfaces. When the office was perceived as clean by the staff members, they were self-reportedly both more productive and satisfied.
In the recommendations section of the article the researchers themselves highlight the importance of regular cleaning to help maintain or achieve maximum personal productivity and CMOS wholeheartedly agrees with this recommendation!
This research helps show that cleaning isn’t just about making an office presentable and maintaining staff member’s physical health but is related to mental health as well. Creating a clean office space can work wonders for staff members and improve their wellbeing, which should be a no-brainer for any office environment.
Now there are some limitations to the research, including being limited to five workplaces, and not taking place in New Zealand, but it still highlights an important relationship between cleanliness and a positive and productive work environment.
